Sidequest due to player unavailability

The team was called back to Kayakee after rescuing Bulkhead. Ted and Ryan took the New Transformers to the old transformers, one of the Elders brought Tim and Myself a pair of youths that are top of their classes, and ready to start their apprenticeships.

The Duo was Turtle a boy, that was interested in trade and shooting things and River, she was interested in animals and randomly attacking things including Turtle. Turtle was interested in seeing how we fight and wanted an apprenticeship with the team. River was there because Turtle was there.

With the “Surprise, Here’s a couple of kids that were sick of dealing with” and the need of something youth friendly for them to due. We tested out their schooling had them shoot a target, They did ok for a couple of 12 year olds. Had them hand to hand fight, also what we expected from a couple of kids, worried about form and the like, they had the basics. River lost to Turtle, but just barely.

We had them go get their packs, as we decided to take a supply run to Baldwin, as we hadn’t been there in a since the incident years prior, and they were due for a trade run.

We loaded them and the trade goods up in one of the towns Deuce and half, and drove to Baldwin. When we arrived we saw the settlements gate open with on guards and no one on the walls. Tim and I had the kids stay in the truck as we got out and checked out the strangeness. Baldwin was oddly quiet, Tim cast Sense Life, and determined that most of the people were concentrated in one area.

Tim summoned a spirit animal and sent it into the town to investigate. The spirit saw a couple of people walking of a ways and went to the area the mass of people was, which turned out to be the Town hall. Entering the town hall the spirit could see that the town was in some kind of meeting. Dispelling the spirit, Tim told me what he saw through the spirits eyes, we loaded back into the truck and drove through the gate.

As we Drove in the meeting let out and people coming out saw the truck and noticing no one was leading us the alarm went out, people started grabbing guns and what not. We explained what we found when we arrived and the town did a head count and everyone was alive and alright, they then started checking the town. They found one of their storage building was ransacked, and a significant portion of food in that building was gone.

We went to the storage building and had the kids come with, instructing them on how to conduct and investigation. We found various foot prints coming and going from the building, of people, inside the building we found bear tracks, several both large and small, with no bear tracks outside the building. Tim cast a spell that allowed him to view what occurred at a location. Tim saw that a large family, A Man, Woman teenage boy, and four younger children walked into the storage building, transformed into bears, broke open crates and gorged themselves, then transformed back to people and left.

While Tim was doing that I radioed for a stickhound or bramble to come to my location, a bramble happened to be patrolling nearby and came. We tracked the shape shifters, to a nearby lake about a mile from the town, showing the kids how to track while being careful, because we knew little of what we were dealing with.

At the lake we found a raised mound of rocks that was the opening of a small cave. We called out and a voice answered telling us to go away. Tim sent a Seeing Eye into the cave, and saw one of the bears laying on the ground wounded while the others were looking on worried, as the Male was casting magic over the wounded one. Tim told them we could help, the wounded one. The Male told us to leave the weapons out side, which we did just with the Bramble that was left guarding the entrance.

We found that the bears had asked the town for food but had never received an answer, so they just raided the storehouse, because they were near starving. Turned out they had asked one of the Trade shipment drivers who didn’t bother telling anyone. The teenager was the one that was wounded, We turned this into a teaching exercise. The Male, the father of the family, was casting a light healing spell, which was keeping the wound from getting worse but not making it better, the wound was a gunshot, and the bullet was still inside, trapped behind the back ribs. Tim cast a light spell, to provide adequate light in the cave versus a small gas lamp. With my supervision and guidance, River whom wanted to be a vet, extracted the bullet, while Tim cast healing magic so that she didn’t make things worse, as it take her a couple of tries to extract the bullet. Once removed Tim cast greater healing magic, and the Teenager was fine.

The bullet turned out to be from a 308. We discussed that it would not been from Kayakee hunters, and it wasn’t from the town as they were in the town, and the teen had been shot on their way back to the cave. During this discussion the teen cast a light spell, showing off his magical skill, while talkign to the teen about wantonly casting magic, we heard heavy steps on the frozen ground outside the cave. As we exited the cave the hunter came around the mound and froze at the sight on Tim, Myself and a Bramble sitting there giving him the eye.

The hunter turned out to be a guy that goes by McGuire, his last name. We asked what he doing he replied he was hoping to collect his dinner. I read his mind as Tim explained that that was not going to happen. At McGuire’s confusion and dismay at loosing a meal. We offered to take him to get food. Tim went back to Baldwin to finish unloading the truck and get it.

We moved the bears and Mcguire back to Kayakee, getting all parties medically checked out and cleaned up. We rapid built the bears a Yurt a marked it with a sleeping bears sign, a bit away from the town yet within ready patrol radius. The Kids got sent home, and an additional load of supplies was sent to Baldwin.

Once McGuire was done with medical and cleaned up we got him some food and stiff drink. We found out that McGuire had slipped through a rift in 2026, Like me he was sleeping and woke up in this world. He lucked out in his PTSD he slept with his Browning 308. He had been a member of 82 Airborne for 8 years Lived in Boston, and was visiting his folks in Lapeer. He didn’t quite believe us about the world until we introduced him to Wheeljack , Which he in a state of shock said “I had you toy growing up”. We introduced him to a couple other DB’s including Shari. In explaining that in coming to this word he might have been altered, his aura indicated he had. He stated he didn’t want to be there and Promptly turned invisible.

We calmed him down, go him back to being visible and explained that it was kinda like the fantastic four and hey He turned out to be Sue Storm. We babysat him for a while as he had a familiar existential crisis. And we explained that we were unsure if he would be able to go home..
